Parish of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady of Healing the Sick in Katowice, Catholic parish in Katowice, Poland
The Parish of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady of Healing the Sick is a church in central Katowice measuring 43 meters long with an octagonal tower rising 71 meters high. The building was constructed using Silesian dolomite and contains several ornate interior features.
Construction took place between 1862 and 1870 under architect Alexis Langer from Wroclaw. It became the first and remains the oldest Catholic place of worship still standing in the city today.
The interior features stained glass windows by Adam Bunsch showing the contrast between sin and virtue. The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament displays a portrayal of Father Emil Szramek dressed in Silesian traditional clothing.
The church is located in central Katowice and is easy to reach on foot. It welcomes visitors during regular services and ceremonies when you can explore the interior and observe the space at your own pace.
The altar area holds a 15th century altar, one of the most valuable artifacts within the walls. This medieval piece connects the place to a time long before the building itself was constructed.
