Gruta das Torres, Natural monument and lava cave in Criação Velha, Azores, Portugal
Gruta das Torres is a lava tunnel system on the western slopes of Pico Island, extending through several interconnected passages beneath the surface. The interior features wall ledges, lateral benches, and cornices that show how lava once moved through these underground passages.
The cave received its first scientific exploration in 1990, after which speleologists documented it as the longest lava tube in the Azores. This discovery made the site important for understanding the volcanic history of the region.
The name "Gruta das Torres" refers to the tower-like formations and pillars visible along the cave walls, created by ancient lava flows. These structures shape how visitors experience the interior and reveal the power of volcanic forces that shaped the island.
Visitors can explore the first section on a guided tour with small groups, and the pathways are well-marked and safe to walk on. The underground environment stays cool year-round, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea.
The tunnel system displays seven distinct layers in its walls, each representing different phases of lava formation. These layers allow visitors to see the complexity of the volcanic processes that shaped this underground space.
