Praia Islet, Island off Graciosa, Azores, Portugal
Praia Islet is a small, uninhabited rocky outcrop in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Graciosa Island in the Azores, Portugal. It sits next to the only sandy beach on the island and is clearly visible from the shore.
Praia Islet has long served as a landmark for fishermen from Graciosa, who used its position to navigate along the coast. Over time, it was designated a protected area to preserve the seabirds that nest there.
Praia Islet is known as a nesting ground for Monteiro's Storm Petrel, a seabird found only in the Azores. Birdwatchers from many countries visit Graciosa specifically to catch sight of this bird flying low over the water near the islet.
Praia Islet is easy to spot from the coast of Graciosa and can be observed comfortably from the nearby beach. Those who want a closer look can take a boat trip along the coast, but landing on the islet is not permitted.
Monteiro's Storm Petrel, which nests on the islet, is one of the rarest storm petrels in the world and breeds only on a handful of islands in the Azores. It is nocturnal and returns to its nesting sites only after dark, so daytime visitors rarely spot it on land.
