Basarab Overpass, Cable-stayed bridge in Bucharest, Romania
The Basarab Overpass is a cable-stayed bridge crossing the Dambovita River and railway tracks in Bucharest. It carries vehicle traffic above the water on its lower deck while tram lines run on a separate upper level.
Work on this cable-stayed structure began in November 2006 and finished in 2011. The completion brought a major transportation improvement to Bucharest by linking previously disconnected parts of the city.
The bridge functions as a modern transportation nexus in Bucharest, incorporating both vehicular traffic lanes and dedicated tram routes above the city landscape.
Pedestrians and cyclists can use this crossing via integrated ramps and an elevator, making access to stations on different levels convenient. Plan for extra time during rush hours as traffic volume becomes quite heavy.
Two concrete towers reaching 84 meters high support 60 steel cables, making this the widest cable-stayed bridge in Europe. This remarkable design allows the crossing to span the river and railway without disrupting the infrastructure below.
