Matache Măcelaru Hall, Historic monument in Bucharest, Romania.
Matache Măcelaru Hall was a market building in Bucharest with a steel-framed structure from the 19th century, featuring large glass panels and wooden enclosures following European market hall design. The structure stood at Piața Botescu Haralambie in the city center and remained the last surviving market hall of its kind in Bucharest.
The building was constructed by Bucharest Municipality between 1887 and 1899 following the modern market hall designs of that era. In 1940 and 1941, the structure underwent modifications to its masonry and metal components.
The hall carried the name of a 19th-century butcher whose work attracted many visitors to the square. This name reflects how local tradespeople shaped the identity of the marketplace.
The hall was located in Sector 1 of Bucharest at a central public square that was easy to access on foot. The site was prominently placed within the city center, making it convenient for pedestrian visitors.
The building was demolished in 2013 despite promises from the city and organized efforts by residents to preserve and repurpose it. This loss ended a long-standing market tradition in downtown Bucharest.
