Independence Monument, Iași, Historic monument in central Iași, Romania.
The Independence Monument in Iași is a bronze statue standing 17 meters (56 feet) tall, showing a female figure holding a victory flag above her head. The travertine base supports six large carved reliefs depicting historical scenes.
The monument was inaugurated in 1980 to mark a hundred years since Romania gained independence from Ottoman rule. The war that secured this freedom took place in 1877.
The six large reliefs carved into the base show scenes of struggle and determination during the independence movement. Walking around the monument, you can read these moments as if looking at the pages of history.
The monument stands on Independence Boulevard in front of the Municipal Polyclinic in central Iași, easily reached by public buses. The surrounding square has good lighting and offers clear views from multiple angles.
The statue's design incorporates the geographical outline of the country between the flag and the upper body of the female figure. This hidden detail connects the monument to the nation in a clever artistic way.
