Banu Church, Romanian Orthodox church in Iași, Romania.
Banu Church is a Romanian Orthodox church building in Iași featuring Baroque architecture with a trefoil floor plan, large windows framed by stucco ornaments, and a bell tower positioned above the entrance vestibule.
The original wooden structure was built in 1705 by boyar Savin Zmucilă, though early 1800s renovations transformed it into a stone building. Metropolitan Iacob Stamati oversaw this major reconstruction that gave the church its current form.
The carved wooden iconostasis with gold leaf catches the eye, while Renaissance-style paintings in warm tones decorate the interior walls throughout the church.
The church is located on Strada Banu 9 and is easily accessible by public transportation in the city center. Visitors should plan their trip with flexible timing, as occasional religious services or events may affect access during regular hours.
This church was among the first places in Iași where services were held in Romanian language instead of Old Church Slavonic or Greek as in other local churches. This linguistic choice set it apart as a significant religious location for the region.
