Plătărești monastery, Religious monastery in Plătărești, Romania.
Plătărești monastery is an Orthodox monastery and historic monument in Călărași County, set in the flat farmland of the Bărăgan Plain in southern Romania. The compound includes a stone church with painted interior walls, along with other monastic buildings arranged within an enclosing wall.
The monastery was built between 1632 and 1646 under Voivode Matei Basarab, one of the most active patrons of religious construction in Wallachia at the time. He sponsored the building of several churches and monasteries across the region, and Plătărești is one of the surviving examples from that period.
The monks here follow the Orthodox church calendar and hold daily services inside the church. Visitors can hear the bells ring and watch the daily rhythm of monastic life unfold within the walls.
The monastery is in a rural area of the Bărăgan Plain, so roads leading to it are narrow and the surroundings are purely agricultural. Visiting during warmer months makes the journey easier, as conditions in the area can be difficult after heavy rain.
The monastery stands in the middle of open grain fields with no village immediately around it, which is rare for a religious site of this age in Romania. When the harvest ripens, the color of the fields and the white of the walls create a contrast that visitors often find unexpected.
