Belushya Guba, Military settlement in Novaya Zemlya archipelago, Russia
Belushya Guba is a military settlement located on the Gusinaya Zemlya peninsula of Yuzhny Island within the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. It contains residential buildings, schools, and a naval hospital that provides medical services to the community.
The settlement was founded in 1897 following a coastal survey, initiated after Governor Aleksandr Engelgardt of Arkhangelsk visited the region. This expedition led to the establishment of a new administrative outpost in the north.
The central square displays an Orthodox church positioned near a Lenin monument, showing how religious and Soviet traditions coexist in the settlement. This arrangement reveals how different historical periods are reflected in the town's layout.
The settlement can be reached by flights from nearby Rogachevo Airport, which operates two weekly connections to Arkhangelsk. Visitors should plan any trips well in advance due to the remote location and limited transportation options.
The sheltered waters of the bay maintain conditions that enable year-round sailing with minimal icebreaker assistance. This makes the harbor a rare refuge in this extreme Arctic region, where ice is normally a significant factor.
