Bodaybo, Gold mining settlement in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia
Bodaybo is a small town in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, positioned where the Vitim and Bodaybo rivers meet. The settlement sits roughly 1,290 kilometers east of Irkutsk at an elevation of around 280 meters above sea level.
The settlement began in 1864 to support gold prospecting in the region, quickly developing into a key mining center. In 1925, the place gained official town status during the Soviet period.
The local population preserves traditional Siberian mining customs through annual celebrations that connect present-day residents with their industrial heritage.
Angara Airlines connects the local airport with Irkutsk on a regular basis, sparing residents and visitors a road journey through the Siberian taiga. The air link often remains the quickest option, especially during spring thaw when roads become difficult to navigate.
In 2002, the so-called Vitim event occurred nearby, probably involving a meteorite entering the atmosphere. Scientists from different countries traveled to the area to study traces of this phenomenon.
