The Khamar-Daban is a mountain range extending roughly 420 kilometers from east to west across Buryatia and Irkutsk Oblast, composed of slate, gneiss, basalt, limestone, and granite. Its highest summit, Utulinskaya Podkova, rises to 2,396 meters above the surrounding landscape.
The name Khamar-Daban comes from the Buryat language, combining khamar meaning nut with dabaan meaning pass or mountain ridge. This linguistic origin reflects the deep connection between the range and the people of the region.
A tragic incident in 1993 marked the range when six members of a hiking group perished under mysterious circumstances near Retranslyator summit.
