Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island, Arctic island in New Siberian archipelago, Russia
Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island extends over 5,156 square kilometers with a maximum elevation of 311 meters above the Arctic Ocean waters.
Russian merchant Ivan Lyakhov first explored this remote island in 1773, leading scientific expeditions to document its geographical features and natural resources.
The Kigilyakh Peninsula received its name from the Yakut language, where 'kigilyakh' refers to the weathered rock formations resembling stone figures.
The island experiences temperatures ranging from -40.5°C in winter to 9.4°C in summer, with most precipitation occurring between June and September.
The permafrost-preserved sediments contain numerous Pleistocene fossils, including mammal bones and plant remnants from ancient geological periods.
