Medvezhya, Extinct volcano in Kurilsky District, Russia.
Medvezhya is an extinct volcano on Iturup Island in the Kuril Islands chain, rising to 1,125 meters (3,691 feet) in elevation. The volcanic complex still features active fumaroles that scientists study for their geological formations.
The volcano remained active until October 1999, when its last recorded eruption took place in the Russian Far East. This marked the end of its active geological phase.
The name Medvezhya comes from the Russian word meaning bear, referencing the wildlife that lives in the surrounding mountain forests.
The mountain is remote and requires good physical fitness to visit due to difficult terrain and harsh weather conditions. Visitors should prepare accordingly and stay on established routes for safe navigation.
The rare mineral rheniite, a rhenium sulfide compound, was first discovered here in 1994 and occurs naturally only in this volcanic complex. This geological feature makes the location special for mineral enthusiasts and researchers alike.
