Atsonupuri, Stratovolcano in central Iturup Island, Russia.
Atsonupuri is a stratovolcano located in central Iturup Island, rising to about 1,206 meters above sea level. The mountain forms a prominent peak within the Kuril Islands chain in the Russian Far East.
The volcano experienced two documented eruptions in 1812 and 1932, with the latter representing its most recent volcanic activity on Iturup Island. Since then the mountain has remained quiet but is still classified as an active volcano.
The mountain holds three different names in Russian, Japanese, and Ainu languages, reflecting how various peoples have occupied and shaped these islands over time. Walking around the area, you can sense this cultural layering in local place names and traditions.
The mountain can be climbed via established trails by experienced hikers, though conditions vary significantly with the season. Weather changes rapidly in this region, so visitors should bring well-suited gear and sturdy equipment.
The mountain stands approximately 17.4 kilometers from its nearest taller neighbor, Stokap, creating a geologically distinct formation. This relative isolation gives the volcano its own volcanic character within the district.
