Nemuro Subprefecture, Administrative division in eastern Hokkaido, Japan
Nemuro is an administrative region in eastern Hokkaido that encompasses five municipalities spread across coastal and rural areas. The region combines small urban centers with large stretches of open land and fishing ports.
The region was established in 1897 and merged with a neighboring administrative district in 1903 to form a larger territory. This combination created the administrative structure that still exists in eastern Hokkaido today.
Fishing remains deeply rooted in local life, shaping how coastal communities are organized and how people earn their living. The connection to the sea runs through daily routines and the work that defines these settlements.
Nakashibetsu Airport connects the region to major cities across Japan and serves as the main entry point for visitors. From there, local buses and car rentals make it easy to explore the area.
The region officially claims territories in the southern Kuril Islands, which are administered by Russia. This territorial dispute represents a long-standing point of contention between the two countries.
