Friendship of Peoples Fountain, Decorative fountain at VDNKh exhibition center in Moscow, Russia
The Friendship of Peoples Fountain is a monument at the VDNKh exhibition center featuring 16 gilded bronze figures surrounding a central wheat sheaf in an octagonal basin. The structure is constructed from granite, steel, concrete, and bronze with detailed craftsmanship throughout.
Architects Konstantin Topuridze and Grigory Konstantinovsky created this fountain for the opening of VDNKh in 1954. The work expressed the unity of Soviet republics and their cooperation during that period.
The golden female figures surrounding the central wheat bundle wear clothing and hold products representing different Soviet republics. Visitors can observe the traditional garments and agricultural symbols of each region.
The fountain is located outdoors at the VDNKh grounds and is easily found from various pathways and plazas within the exhibition center. Visitors should arrive early in the day for the best view of the water displays, especially in sunny weather.
The copper bowl at the center holds a 7.4-meter-tall metal composition depicting wheat, sunflowers, and hemp stalks. This central sculpture was technically challenging to construct and remains an overlooked detail for many visitors.
