Khingan Nature Reserve

Khingan Nature Reserve is a protected area in the Amur region that spreads across lowlands and forested mountains, combining wetland ecosystems with upland forests. The landscape includes shallow lakes, marshes, and dense woodland that create varied habitats across the reserve.

The reserve was established in 1963 to protect steppe habitats and breeding grounds for endangered crane species. This protection aimed to preserve critical landscapes in Russia's Far East region.

Research teams from Russian universities conduct regular studies of bird populations, particularly focusing on red-crowned cranes and white-naped cranes.

The reserve functions as a breeding ground for rare crane species that undertake lengthy migrations across continents. These migratory birds stop here during their annual journeys between distant regions.
