Kuban, Geographic region in Krasnodar Krai, Russia
Kuban is a region in southern Russia that spreads across wide plains between the Caucasus and the Sea of Azov, shaped by the river of the same name. The land shifts from fertile fields in the north to hills and woodlands in the southern part near the mountain range.
In the late 18th century the area became part of the Russian Empire when Cossacks from Ukraine moved here and founded new settlements. In the following decades numerous villages and towns emerged that changed the land in lasting ways.
The region maintains a complex mixture of ethnic groups, including Russians, Armenians, Ukrainians, and Adyghe people, each contributing to regional traditions.
Much of the area is farmland so visitors mostly experience open fields, villages and smaller towns. Those interested in rural life and traditional ways of living will find many opportunities to explore and observe.
Along the coast toward the Sea of Azov salt marshes and lagoons stretch out forming a special ecosystem. In these brackish zones plants and animals live that are rarely or never found elsewhere in the territory.
