Sacred Prophetic Chamber, Religious burial chamber in Prophet's Mosque, Medina, Saudi Arabia
The chamber sits within the Prophet's Mosque and is visible through ornate screens that allow a view of the interior structure. Visitors see a five-cornered enclosure with a green dome above, protecting the inside from direct access.
After the Prophet died in 632, his living area was turned into a burial site and remained in that location. Later, additional protective walls were built in the eighth century to secure the spot and prevent any interference.
Visitors stand before a green dome and offer greetings to the Prophet, treating the area with respect and silence. People from all over the world see this moment as an important part of their religious journey and move slowly along the outer walls.
Men and women use separate entrances and must follow religious dress codes covering arms, legs, and head. The area can become very crowded during prayer times, so visiting outside peak hours is advisable.
The green dome above the chamber was only added in the 13th century and was originally white before receiving its current color. The unusual five-cornered shape came from later modifications that strengthened protection and was not part of the original design.
