Harrat Rahat

Harrat Rahat is an extensive volcanic field near Medina with multiple cones and broad expanses of dark, solidified lava covering the ground. The terrain displays various forms of volcanic rock formations spread across rolling land.

The volcanic field was created through repeated eruptions over thousands of years, building up layers of lava and ash. The most recent significant eruption in the 13th century left fresh lava flows that extended toward nearby settlements.

The dark lava rocks have shaped how people in nearby settlements build their homes, with volcanic stone used for walls and structures. This practice reflects how local communities have adapted to live alongside this dramatic geological feature.

Visitors need special permits and sturdy vehicles to explore this remote area, as the terrain is rough and challenging to cross. Guided tours from Medina are the most practical way to see the landscape safely.

The area contains hundreds of separate volcanic vents of varying sizes and shapes, each recording different phases of volcanic development. This variety allows visitors to observe the complexity of volcanic processes in one place.
