Pyramids of Meroe

More than 100 pyramids rise from golden sand dunes near the Nile River, forming two distinct royal necropolises in the northern and southern sections.

The Kushite kingdom established Meroe as their capital in 300 BCE, constructing pyramids as burial chambers for rulers until the fourth century CE.

The pyramids demonstrate the continuation of ancient Egyptian burial traditions, adapted by Kushite rulers who developed their own architectural style and written script.

Each day only about ten visitors reach this remote UNESCO World Heritage site, requiring advanced planning and local transportation arrangements.

Sudan contains twice as many pyramids as Egypt, with the Meroe structures distinguished by their steeper sides and narrower bases than Egyptian counterparts.
