The Mahdi's tomb

The white domed structure stands as the burial place of Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, featuring traditional Islamic architectural elements and decorative patterns.

Built in 1885 to house the remains of Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, the tomb underwent reconstruction in 1947 after sustaining damage during the 1898 Anglo-Egyptian campaign.

The tomb represents a central monument of Sudanese resistance against colonial powers and maintains religious significance for Islamic followers in North Africa.

Visitors can reach the tomb by taking local transportation from central Khartoum to Omdurman, with guided tours available throughout the week.

The tomb's brass finials, removed during the 1898 battle, are now displayed in various British institutions, including the Royal Engineers Museum.
