Sudan National Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Mogran, Khartoum, Sudan.
The Sudan National Botanical Garden is located in Mogran, a district of Khartoum, and spreads across a large area near where the White Nile and Blue Nile rivers meet. The grounds contain trees, shrubs, and plants from different climate zones of Sudan, ranging from dry desert areas to the wetter regions of the south.
The garden was founded in 1954 to catalog and protect Sudan's plant diversity. After devastating floods in 1988, it underwent major reconstruction work in 1993 to repair and restore the grounds.
The garden was created to showcase Sudan's plant diversity and help people understand the different ecosystems found across their country. Visitors come to see the plants that grow in their own region and notice how the vegetation changes from one part of Sudan to another.
The garden is open from Sunday through Thursday, and visitors can walk around and explore the different plant zones during visiting hours. It is best to arrive early in the morning when temperatures are cooler, as daytime heat can be quite intense.
The site works as a living museum where Sudan's different plant zones are arranged side by side in a compact area. Walking through, visitors can move from desert plants to tropical vegetation in just a few minutes and experience all of Sudan's climate zones in miniature.
