Skeppsholmen, Military islet in Stockholm, Sweden
Skeppsholmen is a small island in central Stockholm, sitting between Gamla Stan and Djurgården and connected to the mainland by the Skeppsholmsbron bridge. The island holds several museums and a number of historic buildings that date from its time as a naval base.
In the 17th century the island was turned into a naval base after serving as a royal garden. That military role shaped the buildings and layout that visitors still see today.
The Moderna Museet holds works by Picasso, Dalí, and other 20th-century artists in a building that is itself worth a look. Admission to the permanent collection is free, which makes the island a popular stop for art lovers of all kinds.
The island is freely accessible at any time and can be reached by bus 65 from central Stockholm or by boat from Slussen, Djurgården, and Nybroplan. A morning or early afternoon visit tends to be quieter than later in the day when more visitors arrive.
The sailing ship af Chapman, permanently moored along the island's shore, works as a youth hostel where travelers can spend the night on the water. It is one of the few historic sailing ships in the world that functions as an overnight accommodation.
