SS Orion, Museum ship in Stockholm, Sweden
The SS Orion is a steamship about 32 meters long with a compound engine and special valve system, moored at the western shore of Skeppsholmen. The vessel keeps its original structure and technical equipment from its time as an inspection ship.
The ship was built in 1929 at a Swedish shipyard and served for decades with the Maritime Administration, checking waterways and lighthouses. It was retired in 1979 when modern vessels took over these duties.
The ship displays how sailors and maritime inspectors worked on board, giving visitors a sense of what daily life at sea was like in the 20th century. The rooms with original furnishings help you understand the routines and challenges these workers faced.
Visitors can explore the ship on tours and see the machinery and work spaces that show how it operated. It helps to check ahead which areas are accessible, as some parts may be closed depending on the season or maintenance work.
In the 1960s, the ship was lengthened by several meters to create more space for new tasks, something still visible in the hull structure today. This modification shows how the vessel was updated during its working life to keep up with changing needs.
