SS Orion, Museum ship in Stockholm, Sweden
SS Orion is a listed historical steamship and museum ship moored on the western shore of Skeppsholmen, in central Stockholm. The vessel is around 32 meters long and about 6 meters wide, and still carries its original compound engine and technical equipment from its years as an inspection ship.
SS Orion was built in 1929 at a Swedish shipyard and spent decades working for the Maritime Administration, checking waterways and lighthouses along the Swedish coast. It was taken out of service in 1979 when newer vessels replaced it.
The SS Orion shows how sailors and maritime inspectors lived and worked on board, with original rooms and equipment still in place. Walking through the vessel gives a clear sense of what daily life looked like on a working government ship in the 20th century.
The ship is moored on the western side of Skeppsholmen, a small island in central Stockholm that is easy to reach on foot. It is worth checking ahead which parts of the vessel are open, as access can vary depending on the time of year or ongoing maintenance.
In the 1960s, the ship was extended by several meters to make room for new tasks, and the change is still visible in the hull structure today. This work was done while the vessel was still in active service, which was unusual for a ship of its size and role.
