Museum of Spirits, Working life museum in Djurgården, Sweden
The Museum of Spirits is a working life museum in Djurgarden with permanent exhibitions about wine and spirits production, historical equipment, labels, and artifacts. The collection also includes artworks by over 800 international artists who engaged with these production themes.
The museum was founded in 1967 to mark the 50th anniversary of AB Vin & Sprit and was initially housed in Gronstedtska palace. In 2012 it relocated to Djurgarden, where it has remained since.
The museum shows Swedish drinking traditions through interactive displays and artworks by international creators. Visitors can see how beverages played a role in local life and which artists engaged with themes around spirits production.
The museum spans three exhibition areas that visitors can explore at their own pace. Multiple entrances and information points throughout the building help with navigation.
The collection holds Andy Warhol's first commissioned artwork for Absolut Vodka from 1986, which launched a legendary series of 900 additional pieces. This makes it a pivotal moment in the brand's art history, showing how artists reinterpreted the bottle over subsequent years.
