Slakthusområdet, Industrial district in southern Stockholm, Sweden.
Slakthusområdet is a former industrial district in southern Stockholm where new residential and office buildings stand alongside factory structures from the early 20th century. The area covers several city blocks, with wide streets running between newly built towers and restored brick halls.
The area was established in 1912 as a central food processing hub for Stockholm, with slaughterhouses, cold storage, and processing halls serving the growing city. Over the course of the 20th century, these functions declined and the site began its gradual shift toward a mixed-use neighborhood.
Some of the old factory halls now house concert venues and event spaces that draw crowds on weekends. The raw brick walls and high ceilings of the former industrial buildings give these venues a character you rarely find elsewhere.
The district is easy to reach from central Stockholm by public transport, and a new metro station is planned to improve connections further. Walking through the area on foot is the best way to take in the mix of old and new buildings.
Some of the original cold storage buildings from the slaughterhouse era are still standing and can be recognized by their thick insulated walls, which you can touch as you walk past. They were never torn down because their construction was too solid to remove cost-effectively.
