Gullmarsplan, Transit hub and pedestrian zone in Johanneshov, Sweden.

Gullmarsplan is a large interchange plaza and pedestrian zone in Johanneshov where three transportation systems meet, moving people across Stockholm's districts daily. The space combines transit infrastructure with green areas and public seating, creating a functional hub that also serves as a gathering area.

The plaza took shape during 1940s urban expansion when Stockholm planned new connections between districts, with the metro station opening in 1950 as the fourth station on the network. Additional transit lines were added over decades, gradually transforming the intersection into a major hub.

The plaza serves as a meeting point where locals and visitors pass through daily, shaped by its role connecting different neighborhoods. The surrounding area reflects how transport hubs become informal social spaces where people pause and gather between journeys.

Pathways are clearly marked and easy to follow when transferring between transit systems, with good lighting and accessibility features throughout the interchange area. Arriving visitors can orient themselves quickly since the different transport lines converge in a compact space.

Just beyond the plaza sits Avicii Arena, a large concert and sports venue that draws crowds on event days, creating an energetic atmosphere in the surrounding area. This proximity shapes how the plaza functions differently depending on what is happening at the venue.
