Åhléns Söder, Department store in Södermalm, Sweden
Åhléns Söder is a seven-floor department store located at the intersection of Götgatan and Ringvägen, distinguished by a tower pavilion topped with a red Å sign. The structure occupies a prominent corner location and contains retail spaces distributed across its multiple levels.
The building opened in 1915 on the former site of the Pilsenerbryggeriet brewery, serving as the first department store location for Åhlen & Holm in Stockholm. The construction marked a significant transition of the Södermalm area from an industrial zone to a modern shopping district.
The building served as the editorial and printing hub for Vårt Hem magazine starting in 1921, a publication focused on home and family life. This role connected the store to the daily lives and domestic interests of Stockholm households.
The building is easily accessible by public transport and sits at a key tram stop where two major streets intersect. Access to the retail spaces is straightforward, and visitors can navigate between floors without difficulty.
The clock installed on the building in 1942 features a Dala horse sculpture perched on top and has become a defining visual element of the location. This artwork is surprisingly heavy and often goes unnoticed by shoppers focused on the stores below.
