Kalvarija

Kalvarija is a hill near Maribor featuring 455 stone steps that lead through vineyards, past four chapels, and conclude at the Church of Saint Barbara. The route winds through both vineyard sections and forest areas, with the path clearly marked throughout the ascent.

The Church of Saint Barbara was built in the late 1600s as an offering of gratitude for the end of a plague, leading to the creation of the pilgrimage walking route. The hill has since become an established site for pilgrimage in the region.

Access is from the Biotechnical school parking area, where marked trails begin their climb up the hill. Wear sturdy shoes since the path includes stone steps and some unpaved sections.

From the top, visitors can see Stadium Ljudski vrt and expansive views across Maribor while climbing through active vineyards. This blend of pilgrimage route and working wine production areas is uncommon in the region.
