St. George's Church, Ptuj

St. George's Church is a Gothic parish building standing on Slovenski trg in central Ptuj with three aisles, a choir area, and a sacristy. The interior walls preserve paintings and carved altars from different centuries, while the exterior displays Renaissance and Baroque gravestones carved directly into the stone.

The building began in the 12th century and was redesigned in the Gothic style during the 15th century when windows were enlarged and the interior modernized. In 1863 the church gained Provost status, raising its importance in the church hierarchy.

The church has always been the gathering place for the community, where people still come to pray and celebrate important occasions today. Its position on the town square connects it directly to daily life and public events in the center of Ptuj.

The building sits directly on the main square next to the Monument of Orpheus and Town Tower, making it simple to locate and reach. Visitors should know that the church is open during services and modest dress is expected when entering.

A carved stone relief of the Epiphany from 1515 shows exceptional detail and sits on the exterior where visitors often overlook it as they pass. The restored three-winged Laib Altar from 1460 inside displays fine carvings depicting various biblical scenes, revealing the skill medieval craftsmen possessed.
