Lake Retba, Salt lake near Dakar, Senegal

The saline waters of Lake Retba span three square kilometers with a maximum depth of three meters, located 30 kilometers from Dakar.

Lake Retba transformed from a freshwater lake in the 1980s due to an extended drought period that modified its water composition.

The lake functions as a major salt production center where workers protect their skin with shea butter while extracting 24,000 tons annually.

Visitors can access Lake Retba throughout the year, though the pink color appears strongest during the dry season from November to June.

The Dunaliella salina algae combined with intense sunlight and mineral concentration creates the lake's pink color, reaching 40 percent salinity.
