Zoo de Hann, Nature reserve and zoological park in Hann Bel-Air, Senegal.
Zoo de Hann is a nature reserve and zoological park in Hann Bel-Air spanning more than 60 hectares. The grounds include a protected forest area where African wildlife such as lions, gazelles, and crocodiles inhabit the space.
The facility was founded in 1903 under Governor Martial Merlin as a public garden and plant nursery. Over time, it developed into the zoological park that exists today.
The ethnobotanical garden shows over 250 plant species that people in Senegal have traditionally used for farming and medicine. Walking through it, you see how plants connect to everyday life and local knowledge.
The grounds are easy to explore on foot and offer plenty of space for walking and observing the animals. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and prepare for sunny, warm weather, as shaded areas are limited throughout the park.
The grounds once served as shelter for local residents during wartime, showing that the place had a role beyond animal conservation. This part of its history is often overlooked by visitors today.
