Place du Souvenir africain

Place du Souvenir africain is a memorial plaza that stretches along Corniche Ouest, featuring two pantheons dedicated to African resistance fighters and cultural leaders. The site also contains a distinctive water feature made from stacked ceramic vessels and multiple sculptures throughout the grounds.

The plaza was established in 2009 as a cultural initiative to honor African figures who resisted slavery and colonial rule. Sembène Ousmane, a filmmaker and artist, became the first person commemorated here through a ceremony that same year.

The plaza brings together sculptures and monuments that honor people who shaped African thought, arts, and leadership across generations. Walking through the space, visitors encounter tributes to writers, filmmakers, and intellectuals whose work still influences people today.

The plaza is open daily for visitors to explore at their own pace along the waterfront setting. Guided tours are available to help visitors understand the story behind each monument and site feature.

The water feature is built from ceramic vessels stacked in a traditional style, blending local craftsmanship with contemporary design. This detail reveals how the project incorporates regional materials and techniques alongside modern artistic expression.
