The Place du Souvenir africain extends along the Corniche Ouest with two pantheons dedicated to African resistance and cultural achievements.
President Abdoulaye Wade initiated this cultural project in 2009 to commemorate African heroes who fought against slavery and colonial domination.
The memorial features a collection of monuments and sculptures that represent African intellectuals, writers, artists, and leaders throughout the centuries.
Visitors can access the plaza daily, with guided tours available to learn about each monument and the water fountain made of stacked ceramic vessels.
The first person honored in the pantheon was Sembène Ousmane, recognized for his contributions to African cinema through a ceremony in 2008.
