The site also contains a distinctive water feature made from stacked ceramic vessels and multiple sculptures throughout the grounds.
The plaza was established in 2009 as a cultural initiative to honor African figures who resisted slavery and colonial rule. Sembène Ousmane, a filmmaker and artist, became the first person commemorated here through a ceremony that same year.
The plaza brings together sculptures and monuments that honor people who shaped African thought, arts, and leadership across generations. Walking through the space, visitors encounter tributes to writers, filmmakers, and intellectuals whose work still influences people today.
