Les Mamelles Lighthouse, Maritime beacon in Ouakam, Senegal
Les Mamelles Lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower standing 16 meters tall on Deux Mamelles hill, accompanied by a two-story building housing machinery and observation rooms. The hilltop location provides wide views across the coast and ocean.
This structure was built in 1864 to guide ships along the West African coast. It became a key navigation point for vessels traveling near Cap Vert.
This beacon serves as a gathering place where people share traditional meals and enjoy music performances together. The site has become central to how locals and visitors connect with each other on the hilltop.
The outdoor area is open to visitors and provides spaces to rest with sea views. Coming early in the day helps you enjoy better light and fewer crowds.
The lantern room at the top contains a special optical lens that floats in mercury. This refined system was used for many decades to safely guide ships at sea.
