Musée Boribana, Contemporary African art museum in Ngor district, Dakar, Senegal.
Musée Boribana is a contemporary African art museum in the Ngor district of Dakar, Senegal. The collection includes over 400 artworks such as photographs, paintings, tapestries, and sculptures displayed in exhibition halls and an outdoor courtyard.
The museum was founded in 1997 by anthropologist Boubacar Koné and actress CCH Pounder and later transferred to the Senegalese government in 2014. This transfer marked a significant shift toward government support and management of the cultural space.
The museum displays works by Senegalese artists and creators from the African diaspora, including those from Guadeloupe, Haiti, Jamaica, and the United States. Visitors encounter pieces that reflect the connections between Africa and the Caribbean and the US.
The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with free entry on Wednesdays. Visitors should plan their time to explore both the interior galleries and the outdoor courtyard fully.
The name Boribana comes from the Mandinka language meaning "the race is over" and reflects a deep connection to the region. The grounds also include three artist studios where resident creators work and develop their pieces.
