General Security Directorate, Syrian intelligence service
The General Security Directorate is an intelligence agency in Syria that gathers and processes security information on behalf of the state. It operates as one of several parallel agencies within the Syrian security apparatus.
The agency took shape during the 20th century as Syria built up its security services under successive governments. Over time it became one of the central pillars of state surveillance and internal control.
The building is a government facility and is not open to the public. It can be seen from the street, but entry is restricted to authorized personnel only.
Syria has maintained several separate intelligence agencies that each report directly to the head of state rather than to one another. This parallel structure was deliberately designed to prevent any single agency from accumulating too much power.
