Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Autonomous region in northeastern Syria.
The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria is a self-governed territory in northeastern Syria stretching along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers through plains, hills and mountain ranges. This region includes several cantons and districts where rural villages and smaller towns sit in dry landscape.
In July 2018, representatives from different communities formed this administrative structure during the third conference of the Syrian Democratic Council in al-Tabqa. It emerged during the Syrian war when local groups took control of areas in the northeast and attempted their own governance.
In towns and villages you hear Kurdish, Arabic, Syriac Aramaic and other languages spoken side by side in daily life. Markets, celebrations and religious observances reflect the customs of different communities who have lived here for generations and continue their traditions.
Anyone traveling through the area will notice that local administrations in individual cantons operate differently and decisions are often made at district level. Along the way it helps to check beforehand on border crossings, road conditions and local regulations, as these can change.
Despite difficult conditions, this region runs its own healthcare services supported by the Kurdish Red Crescent and international organizations. These facilities treat locals and provide care in remote areas where medical help is otherwise hard to find.
