La Goulette, Tunisian town

La Goulette is a port town on the coast of Tunisia near the capital. The city features narrow streets lined with white buildings, an active harbor filled with fishing boats, and a center shaped by maritime traditions and historical layers.

La Goulette was founded by the Spanish centuries ago as a fortified settlement to protect the coast. The town changed hands multiple times, was expanded by Ottoman rulers, and served for centuries as a strategic trading port for Mediterranean ships.

La Goulette's name comes from an Arabic word meaning 'river mouth', reflecting its historic role as a gateway to the sea. Today the town's culture remains deeply rooted in maritime traditions: fishing is central to daily life, restaurants serve fresh seafood, and people gather in waterfront cafes to share stories and meals with neighbors and visitors alike.

La Goulette is easily reached from Tunis by the TGM train or taxi in about 20 minutes. The town is safe to explore on foot along Rue de la Marine, where cafes, restaurants, and markets are found, and it's helpful to carry cash in Tunisian dinars for smaller purchases.

Actress Claudia Cardinale was born in La Goulette in 1938 and became internationally famous. The town remained a rare enclave of Mediterranean and Southern European influences in Tunisia, with neighborhoods founded by Italian settlers that still preserve Italian traditions in architecture, cuisine, and daily life.
