Byrsa, Archaeological hill in Carthage, Tunisia

The Byrsa hill rises prominently above the Gulf of Tunis, featuring ancient residential structures, subterranean water systems, and remnants of Punic settlements.

During the Third Punic War in 146 BCE, Roman general Scipio Aemilianus Africanus captured this strategic citadel, leading to the fall of Carthage.

The Carthage National Museum, located on Byrsa hill, exhibits numerous artifacts that tell the story of Phoenician and Roman civilizations.

Visitors can access multiple archaeological layers, residential quarters, and water systems through designated pathways that connect different sections of the site.

Scientists discovered a 2500-year-old Punic tomb containing remains of an individual with genetic links to ancient Iberian populations.
