Grand Istanbul Bus Terminal, bus terminal in Istanbul, Turkey
The Grand Istanbul Bus Terminal is Europe's largest bus station and located in Bayrampaşa, about 10 kilometers west of the city center. The facility spans multiple platforms with over 700 shops, restaurants, cafes, a hotel, a mosque, and medical clinics that support daily passenger operations.
The bus station was built to handle Istanbul's growing demand for intercity bus travel and was long known as Esenler Otogar. Over time, it expanded and was renovated to serve as a central transportation hub connecting Turkey and neighboring countries.
Since 2016, the terminal is named 15 July Demokrasi Otogar, commemorating those who lost their lives during a failed coup attempt. For many locals, this naming reflects how the city weaves significant events into the fabric of everyday places.
Reach the terminal easily by metro line M1A to Otogar station or by buses from throughout the city. Private vehicles can use the large parking lots, and taxis wait outside for passengers needing rides to other parts of Istanbul.
With over 700 shops, this terminal functions like a small city unto itself, offering hair salons, gift shops, and diverse food options alongside buses. Travelers often discover they can prepare their entire journey from here without leaving the station.
