Antioch, Ancient Greek settlement in Antakya, Turkey

Antioch is an ancient Greek settlement in Antakya whose remains spread over a large area beside the Orontes River. The ruins include sections of walls that once enclosed neighborhoods, along with foundations of public structures and paved streets.

The settlement was established in the late 4th century BC and served as the capital of the Seleucid realm for over two centuries. In 63 BC, Roman forces took control and turned it into the administrative hub of the province of Syria.

The settlement attracted merchants, scholars, and travelers who introduced a wide range of beliefs and customs to the area. Visitors now encounter traces of this diversity in the mix of languages on inscriptions and in the layout of the excavated neighborhoods.

The site spreads over several levels that reveal different periods of occupation, with footpaths linking the main excavated areas. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes because surfaces are uneven and some sections require steps or ramps to reach.

Among the finds are mosaics depicting scenes from everyday activities, including one showing a skeleton holding wine and bread accompanied by Greek inscriptions. This image reminds viewers to enjoy life before it ends.
