Incirlik Air Base, Military air base in Adana, Türkiye.
Incirlik Air Base is a military airfield in the Sarıçam district east of Adana, roughly ten kilometers from the city center and about 32 kilometers inland from the Mediterranean coast. The installation covers more than 1300 hectares and contains hardened aircraft shelters, logistics buildings, residential quarters, and two parallel runways designed for fighter jets and transport planes.
Construction began in 1951 under the direction of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, creating an emergency forward site for bomber aircraft in the eastern Mediterranean during the Cold War. The facility expanded over the following decades and adapted to new operational needs, while cooperation between the United States and Turkey continued through changing political conditions.
The base takes its name from Turkish words referring to fig orchards that once covered this land before military use began. American and Turkish service members share the site, and both nations hold separate ceremonies and observances throughout the year that reflect their distinct military traditions.
Access to the facility is restricted to authorized personnel and their dependents, with strict security checks at all entry points. Visitors should note that the base is not open for public tours or unauthorized entry, and the surrounding area may have restrictions during certain periods.
The installation houses underground storage sites for special weapons systems maintained under strict security protocols. Aircraft from four different national air forces use the same runways, requiring coordinated flight schedules and shared ground operations.
