Develi, District in Kayseri Province, Turkey
Develi is a district in Kayseri Province located in central Anatolia near Mount Erciyes. The area includes a main town and numerous surrounding villages with open plains, rolling hills, and rivers including the Zamantı flowing through fertile farmland.
The area was settled during Hittite times and maintained importance under Phrygian, Persian, and Byzantine rule. After the 1071 Battle of Manzikert, Seljuk Turks established settlements here, followed by rule under the Karamanoğlu Beylik before Ottoman control arrived in 1474.
The name Develi comes from its ancient roots, and the town reflects layers of different civilizations in its stone buildings and narrow streets. Local life still centers on family gatherings at markets and festivals where residents share traditional food and stories passed through generations.
The area offers good conditions for walking and exploring nearby natural attractions like mountain lakes and waterfalls, especially in spring and autumn when weather is mild. Visitors should know that winters are harsh with regular snowfall while summers become hot and dry.
The area is known for pumice deposits, a volcanic stone mined for making building materials and forming a key part of the local economy. Summer festivals honoring poet Seyrani, who was born here, attract visitors with music and traditional food.
