Gerze, Administrative district in Sinop Province, Turkey
Gerze is an administrative district on Turkey's northern Black Sea coast, within Sinop Province. The district is made up of a main town that serves as its center, along with many smaller villages spread across the surrounding hills and coastline.
The area around Gerze was settled in ancient times and passed through Byzantine and later Ottoman rule over the centuries. In the 20th century, it was formally organized as a distinct administrative district under the framework of the modern Turkish state.
Gerze is a coastal town where daily life is closely tied to the sea. Local fishermen bring their catch directly to the small harbor, and the fish market is a regular meeting point for residents from the town and nearby villages.
The main town is reachable by road from Sinop along the coast, and it is where most services and accommodations are found. Smaller villages in the district have few facilities for visitors, so it is worth stocking up on supplies before venturing further inland or along the coast.
Gerze gained national attention in Turkey when a planned nuclear power plant project for the area was abandoned in the 2010s following sustained local opposition. The town is still remembered in Turkish public debate as an example of a local community successfully pushing back against a large infrastructure project.
