Mısır Apartment, Art Nouveau building on İstiklal Avenue in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, Turkey
The Mısır Apartment is a six-story Art Nouveau building on İstiklal Avenue featuring reinforced concrete construction with organic forms and detailed decorative elements across its facade. Today it houses art galleries, private apartments, and a restaurant on its terrace level with direct street access.
Built between 1905 and 1910 by architect Hovsep Aznavur, it initially served as a winter residence for Abbas II, the Khedive of Egypt. This period marks when Istanbul was an important home for wealthy residents from across the Mediterranean region.
The building housed Mehmet Akif Ersoy, who wrote Turkey's national anthem, and poet Mithat Cemal Kuntay during the early 1900s. Their presence made this place a center for Turkish intellectual life during that period.
The building features a rooftop restaurant and terrace that can be easily accessed from the busy İstiklal Avenue. Its location makes it convenient to visit while walking through this busy shopping and cultural district.
French specialists drafted the structural plans and materials were imported from France, making it one of Istanbul's first reinforced concrete buildings of that era. This international collaboration during construction was uncommon for the period.
