Aphrodisias of Cilicia, Ancient port settlement near Cape Tisan, Turkey.
Aphrodisias of Cilicia is an ancient port settlement on Turkey's southern coast with preserved city walls and the remains of a necropolis. A fourth-century church stands on the foundation of an earlier temple that originally occupied this site.
The port settlement was established as a naval base for Ptolemaic Egypt in the fourth century BC and later came under Seleucid and Roman control. Its strategic location on Mediterranean trade routes made it an important stronghold for successive empires.
The settlement served as a meeting point for ships traveling between different Mediterranean coasts, with residents benefiting from the natural harbor and the goods that arrived from distant markets.
The archaeological site lies on Turkey's southern coast near Cape Tisan and is best reached from the city of Silifke. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as walking across the ruins involves uneven terrain and scattered remains.
Austrian archaeologist Rudolf Heberdey rediscovered the remains in 1891, establishing the foundation for our current understanding of this port. His excavations revealed how closely this trading center was connected to the great empires of the eastern Mediterranean.
