Tmolus, Mountain formation in Izmir, Turkey.
Mount Tmolus extends over 130 kilometers between the Hermus and Cayster river valleys, reaching an elevation of 2,157 meters above sea level.
The mountain received its name from Tmolus, King of Lydia, who according to regional tales from ancient times lies buried within its slopes.
The slopes of Mount Tmolus produced wines in ancient times while the Pactolus River carried gold particles from the mountain's mineral deposits.
The mountain range forms a natural boundary between the Gediz River basin in the north and the Küçük Menderes River basin in the south.
The ancient city of Sardis rests at the base of Mount Tmolus, with the settlement of Hypaepa positioned along its southern incline.
