Mut Castle, Medieval fortress in Mut, Turkey
Mut Castle is a medieval fortress located in the town of Mut and features a square outer structure reinforced with nine defensive bastions surrounding an inner cylindrical tower. The entire complex occupies a substantial area and commands views over the surrounding landscape from its elevated position.
The fortress was rebuilt during the 13th century under the Sultanate of Rum and later came under Ottoman control. The structure underwent several reconstructions after changing hands across different periods.
The structure incorporates architectural elements from Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, displaying the evolution of military construction techniques across centuries.
The fortress sits on elevated ground providing views of the surrounding region. Access is available via main road connections running through the town of Mut.
The fortress served as a co-capital during the Karamanid period and underwent significant renovations during Sultan Ahmet I's reign from 1603 to 1617.
