Scarborough, town in Trinidad and Tobago
Scarborough is the main town on the island of Tobago in Trinidad and Tobago, located in the southwestern part of the island. The town has a busy feel with a mix of older and newer buildings, local shops, markets, and small restaurants where people go about their daily activities.
Scarborough became the main capital of Tobago in 1769, replacing the earlier town of Georgetown. The town changed hands several times historically, including a period under French rule when it was called Port-Louis, before settling into its current name and role.
The town takes its name from Scarborough in Yorkshire, England, and this heritage is still visible in the architecture and street names throughout the area. People use the streets for shopping, working, and socializing, creating a friendly atmosphere where daily community life unfolds naturally.
The town is about 10 kilometers from Crown Point Airport and is accessible by bus, taxi, or rental car. Keep in mind that many restaurants have limited hours and may close early, so it is wise to plan meal times in advance.
Shaw Park is the largest theater facility in the Caribbean, holding over 5000 people and serving as a venue for concerts, plays, and cultural events. The modern harbor was only completed in 1991, transforming shipping on the island since vessels previously had to anchor offshore and transfer goods by smaller boats.
